On Saturday afternoon the 2023 Allan Cup Challenge came to a close with an entertaining championship game which saw the Dundas Real McCoys beat the Clarenville Ford Caribous in front of capacity crowd at the J. L. Grightmire Arena in Dundas, Ontario.

The first period featured a lot of back-and-forth action with each team having some quality chances, but it was Caribous collecting the only goal of the frame. Kris Hodge found himself alone on the far side of the McCoys net and collected a pass from Kyle McGrath and put it in at 12:57.

Dundas’ best chance came late in the period when they had a two-on-one, but AJ Whiffen flashed the leather to keep the hosts off the board.

The Ford Caribous would extend their lead to two just moments after the McCoys had a great chance at tying the game. Brett Shute collected the puck in the defensive zone, went down on a three-on-two and ripped a shot over Mike Mole’s shoulder.

With the Dundas fans visibly nervous entering the final period of play, the Real McCoys turned it on. However, it wasn’t until 8:14 of the period that the crowd got to explode when Mackenzie Wood scored on the power play. Then 65 seconds later Dustin Alcock evened the score at two.

The McCoys kept the pressure on, and Jarrett Konkle gave the hometown team their first lead of the game with 9:08 in the third. The lead lasted just under three minutes as Clarenville’s Dan Cadigan scored on the power play to tie the game at four.

Brad Bonello would regain the lead for the McCoys at 16:38 when his shot slipped through the pads of Whiffen and trickled in for what turned out to be the championship winning goal. Wood sealed the victory for Dundas with an empty net goal in the final minute of play.
