Hamilton had ten players find the scoresheet on Sunday night as they scored a 10-7 win over the Buccaneers in Brampton’s CAA Centre.
Special teams got the scoring going in the opening period. Marc-Anthony Simonetta got the home side on the board with a short-handed goal while William Patry sat in the box serving a double minor for kneeing. Moments before the second half of the double minor expired, Chris Knighton scored for Hamilton to even the score. Both teams would add another goal before heading to the locker rooms tied at two.
Andrew Whalen would give the Steelers the lead just 98 seconds into the period but Brett Bloor and Simonetta would answer back to give Brampton a 4-3 advantage on the scoreboard over a 1:29 span, early in the frame. However, it was Hamilton scoring who took the lead to the dressing room after Jordan Gignac and Whalen each scored their second of the game and setting up a wild third period.
In the third, the goal light got a workout as the teams combined for eight goals. Cam Sault and Jacob Buch extended Hamilton’s lead to three but Nic Giamou and Dante Zuccaro got the Buccaneers back within one with just under five minutes remaining in regulation. Sault, Gignac and Buch all found the back of the net over 2:18, putting the game away.
James Cordell led the way with six assists for the Steelers while Gignac had a hat trick and an assist. Buch and Sault would each score twice and add three helpers. For Brampton, Simonetta scored a hat trick, his sixth, seventh and eighth goals of the year while Bloor picked up a pir of goals and Giamou had four points (1G, 3A).
Hamilton will finish their regular season on Friday night when they visit the Dundas Real McCoys at the JL Grightmire Arena. One more game is still to be made up to close out the regular season, but as of this writing no date has been finalized for that game between Wentworth and Brampton.
