ACH mourns the loss of Doug Mathieson
CAMBRIDGE, Ont. - Allan Cup hockey lost an icon on New Year’s Eve. No one familiar with senior hockey, not only in our area but across Canada as well, were not aware of Doug Mathieson’s contribution to the game.
He maintained the allancup.ca website faithfully since 2003 and to the best of our knowledge attended every Allan Cup tournament for the last twenty years and perhaps even earlier. He was also a great supporter of junior hockey.
Mathieson was an accomplished photographer and provided many great photos of Allan Cup hockey over the years that were posted and supplied to the teams involved at no charge. Evidence of his expertise are evidenced on the website and hopefully they can be preserved and the site continued. Mathieson’s photo expertise was not restricted to hockey, he was an avid scuba diver and had underwater cameras that he utilized in his travels which were extensive.
His attention to detail is unsurpassed in hockey circles and he was a walking encyclopedia when it came to the Allan Cup.
Mathieson was no stranger to community service, he retired in 2016 after thirty-five years with the Waterloo Region at Cambridge Memorial hospital and the regional paramedic service.
